Another good day today. Tiny bit of weight gain, still between 21-25% oxygen (room air or slightly above). We're starting to discuss the coming home process. I need to decide who his doctor is going to be and provide that person's name to the NICU, and they said in the next week or so I'll be asked to bring in his carseat so they can test that he does okay in it. He's nippling about every other feed completely, often slightly more than the designated amount which is good.
The lactation specialist came up to work with us again and corrected my positioning slightly then helped point out what he was doing. I can tell when he's sucking or just sitting there, but it's still hard for me to tell if he has his tongue positioned correctly, if he's using an effective suck or the comfort kind that doesn't get any milk, or when he's swallowing. She showed me how to look for those things though it will still take some practice. I always assumed nursing was a natural and instinctive thing, I didn't expect it to take so much effort or be so challenging!
The occupational therapist also came to visit and checked his muscle tone, reflexes and responses. She said he's made a lot of progress and she's very impressed with his strong muscle tone and ability to interact maturing. So a pretty good day overall, nothing remarkablechanged one way or another from yesterday.
