November 7 and 2nd Halloween

Will was a little security officer for Halloween, wasn't he cute? He is copying more, babbling more and since we've switched to less total milk he's eating more. He's starting to get an attitude when we tell him no and talk back. I set a new ultrasound appointment to follow up on baby's heart spot and some other miscelaneous issues that make me higher risk, I'll be going to the perinatologist in La Jolla the 15th very early, should be done there by 9 or 10. 20 weeks 5 days along now and she's starting to wake me up at night kicking.
October 26, fires
As I'm sure most of you have heard, we've been evacuated for the San Diego wildfires. We left our place about 9 PM Sunday, arrived at my in-laws' place about midnight and got evacuated from there about dawn so we went to my sister-in-law's place. Under stress and late for my progesterone (P 17) injection I started having too many braxton-hicks contractions, but the pharmacy that provides it was out of service and we'd left my supply at home not expecting to be gone that long. My mom got us plane tickets and we flew to Seattle Tuesday night, where we've been staying in a hotel. My medication got accidentally shipped to my apartment (no mail delivery there so it'll likely be returned to them) and they re-sent a new shipment which arrived today. I needed the shot by Thursday, I'm waiting for the nurse to contact me this evening to come give it to me. I'm able to get online briefly in the hotel lobby but unknown when I'll be able to get online again.
We got out the important papers and a couple small suitcases of clothes, not enough for how long we've been gone but it's something. I saw a local doctor yesterday to get checked out since I'm high risk, under a huge amount of stress and late for my shot. We got a quick check ultrasound and saw baby's fingers, opening and closing hands and looking at them. Everything looks okay. I missed my big ultrasound on Wednesday but they managed to schedule me for one this morning. It was very disappointing, I only got to see the screen ONCE and it was a blur of baby moving, the tech tilted the screen so I couldn't see it and didn't bother to show me anything. Justin had to step out with Will most of the time it was his nap time and he was not happy. No pics of baby's face, profile, hands, feet, nothing. I got 2 crappy pictures that look like a figure 8, the outline of baby's head and belly, not even worth the trouble of scanning it doesn't even resemble a baby. Measuring right on target for gestational age, 19 weeks today, about 9 ounces. Baby appears to be a girl but they weren't able to confim since she is too active and tech was a moron, but Will was very obviously a boy so no obvious danglies is evidence enough for me until proven otherwise.
Might be a problem though, baby has a good size, clearly visible bright spot on her heart. This could be an indicator of a genetic abnormality such as down syndrome, a heart defect or just a fluke she'll grow out of. They looked from several angles, got her to move around and crowded in a bunch of docs to check it out, nobody was very informative and I can't find much more helpful info than that online. She has no other indicators of a problem, they took a bunch of other measurements and I've had my quad screen bloodwork which tells your odds of genetic defects. I don't have those results, but doc told me they were "normal" some weeks ago. Still quite worried. We'll follow up with my doc and another ultrasound in 4-6 weeks and there's nothing we can do until my doc decides for more testing, she's currently not reachable from the fires.
We still don't know about our apartment. It's not on the burn list. Fast busy when I tried calling apartment manager so circuit is fried. I know stuff right by there burned. Water still off and news says power is mostly still off too. They're letting people back into town but residents only and so far nobody has been able to update us on the status of our place. I don't know when we'll be able to return home, I can't take my medically drama-prone self and Will's trouble making toddlerness back until we know it's safe and ready for us. Justin has to return Sunday for work on Monday, I'm hoping we can return with him since the idea of handling everything on my own is staggering and I really don't want to face a flight home with Will without help. He was great for the flight here, but also extremely exhausted so was easy to put to sleep and we had 2 adults so we could hand him back and forth and get a break. He's doing much better than I would have expected considering everything he's been through, a little bit of the runs from stress and diet change and having trouble napping but otherwise in good spirits.

October 21

Finally got a picture where you can see a bit of Will's front teeth, even if he's making a goofy face. Love his new footie PJs from Grandma Jeannie. He's pretty well stocked on clothes now, his dresser is full! My ultrasound is Wednesday morning, taking guesses what baby is! Hopefully we'll get some pictures this time, haven't gotten any from the last couple ultrasounds, haven't been able to see anything but a blob with a heartbeat anyway but this time we get an in-depth look by a specialist so we should get some with a clear view. So hopefully Wednesday afternoon I'll get pics scanned and sent out!
September 22

I officially have hyperemesis again. I had another PICC line put in since I can't keep down water, just like when I was pregnant with Will, that's what I have hanging from my right elbow. So far I've been wearing my fat pants instead of maternity, but they really don't fit well so I've been shopping for maternity in my size. My old maternity clothes are 4-5 sizes too large now. Jeannie picked me up a pair at the resale shop today, I think they're the smallest and most fashionable jeans I've had in close to 10 years! Ignore the goofy faces and that my color is off, I tried to cover up the "I haven't seen the sun in weeks'"color with a little makeup but I think I made it worse. Oh well. Attaching a pic of me from the side too, starting to get a belly - 14 weeks along now. Thanks again for the new jeans and all the goodies for Will Jeannie :)

July 26

Will is doing great. He's standing without holding onto anything for up to about 30 seconds at a time more and more. He has 4 teeth that we know of, he won't let me check again so may be cutting more - before when he started clamping his mouth shut it was when he was cutting new teeth. He's on almost all whole cow's milk now and doing well. He's also getting larger finger foods and seems to be doing better with those than the small foods now. Currently his favorites are pickle spears, string cheese, grilled cheese sandwich, mini bagels, graham crackers, cheetos and yogurt. Not the healthiest diet but it gets calories into him. I'll be 6 weeks along on Friday. Had the first ultrasound Wednesday, everything is fine but too early to see much. We could see the gestational sack and the yolk sack but not the baby yet. I have another appointment in about 3 weeks so may get to see the baby then. HCG is increasing a little faster than I'd expected but still within the normal range and everything appears to be just fine. Feeling much better than I did with Will too, had a little minor nausea, a couple more noticable spells and been tired but nothing even in the same league with how sick I was last time. Hopeful our good luck holds out! I just got a smaller size clothes a couple weeks ago and now they're uncomfortably snug so I'm back in my baggier clothes. Glad I saved a few sizes of "fat clothes" that can get me through until I need maternity.
July 18, 12 month checkup
Will was 19 lb 3 oz (10th percentile) and 29 1/2 inches (45th!! percentile). So he's tall and skinny right now! he got 2 shots and was a real trooper, he squawked once or twice for one, the other he didn't even bat an eye. So proud of my little bug! Doc also gave us the go ahead to use whole cow's milk. She said remove the valve from the sippy cup and try offering it first thing in the morning before he even sees a bottle with the mix we've been feeding him, and when we run out of the formula I have left to just use cow's milk. Since the formula is milk based he shouldn't have a problem with milk. She also said to continue offering him high calorie solids, and to try offering him finger foods like fries and tater tots, chicken nuggets and cheese before he sees a bottle at lunch - she suggested not even getting it out of the fridge because once he sees it he'll know he's going to get it, so we'll see if that helps any.
His belly button is still an outie but it looks like his hernia has completely repaired itself. He's behind on getting teeth (average now is 6, he has 4), behind on talking (he doesn't say anything consistently, he said a few words for a while but has stopped - doc thinks he's spending his learning on more physical milestones right now), behind on using the sippy cup and behind on eating solids. Doc was impressed with his hand eye coordination, ability to manipulate objects, walking with hands held, cruising, solo standing, pincher grasp and the single finger poke. So overall doing pretty good, about what I expected just taller!

Will is still doing great! He cut his 4th tooth yesterday, now he has both front top and bottom. He's been refusing to eat most of his food the last few days, I'm hoping it's just his teeth bothering him. He's getting about 50:50 breastmilk and formula since my supply is down so much, and I'm now in the process of drying up so increasing how much formula he gets every day to cover the shortage without upsetting his stomach too much. He goes to the doctor tomorrow for a checkup and his 12 month shots. Will also has some exciting news for everyone - he's going to be a big brother! Hopefully I won't get too sick this time, I'm automatically high risk for hyperemesis and/or another preemie, so I'm not messing around with regular ob-gyns just going straight to a high risk specialist. Probably due the end of March, but it's likely I'll need a repeat c-section since Will was a preemie and emergency c-section which both increase the risk of uterine rupture from attempting labor later. If I do have to have a repeat C it'll be scheduled a few weeks before I'm due. We won't know when that is for sure until my next appointment in a month. I was hoping to attempt a VBAC and skip another c-section, but if I get a 2nd opinion that also thinks it would increase my risk more than an average VBAC then I'll accept another c-section. I have to go back on a low-carb diet to prevent getting gestational diabetes again and I'm supposed to stop trying to keep breastfeeding and let myself dry up, which I'm doing, so my body can conserve nutrition in case I get hyperemesis again. I'm also supposed to try to limit my weight gain to only 15-20 lbs, again to help prevent gestational diabetes and any increased risk to me or baby.
So I have tons to do, spring cleaning the house and preparing low-odor meals to put in the freezer for Justin in case I get sick again and can't do anything for a while. We've saved most of Will's baby stuff so we'll need very little for the new one except basics like diapers, and non-boy clothes if it's a girl. I'm stressing over details and the possibility of complications again. My new doctor better be prepared for extensive harrassment, because after last time I don't intend to let a single thing slip, even if I'm convinced I'm crazy and imagining things I'm getting everything checked out this time.
July 11

Will has a new tooth! I discovered it at the dentist this morning, he must have cut it yesterday or last night. So now he has both front bottom teeth and he's in a much better mood today! He's started trying to climb out of his crib, hanging on the rail and windmilling his legs on the bars trying to get ahold, so I need to get him a crib tent before he figures out how to climb out and takes a fall. His mattress is already at the lowest setting, but I don't think he's ready for a toddler bed yet and I'm sure not ready to have him roaming around his room without me supervising at night. They run about $70 new so I'm shopping for one on E-Bay. He's also learned to climb onto the bottom shelf of his changing table and sometimes hangs out in there like a little fort, and likes to scoot head first on his belly into small spaces like behind the toilet to find something interesting to poke with one finger. Stuff he's not supposed to have is of course much more interesting. He's enjoying his cow puppet again too, and his current favorite book is Moo Baa Lalala by Sandra Boynton, which we read almost every afternoon. We're also working on Matilda by Roald Dahl, I read him a chapter most days while he plays on the floor. I've decided I need to talk more around him to help improve his language, since he says a few words but not consistently and he'll go days without saying anything clear, so he doesn't listen to the story but I think just hearing the speech should help. He likes board books though, he sits on my lap when we read them and pokes the picture. He especially likes colorful illustrations with red, yellow and pink.
He may be getting supplemental cow's milk soon, my supply has been decreasing and at the rate I've been having to use my frozen stash to cover shortages it will only hold out another week. I have one can of formula to supplement with, but after that's gone if the pediatrician says it's okay he'll start making the transition to cow's milk. Hopefully he'll continue to get breastmilk as much as I can supply until October as we'd originally planned by the NICU nutritionist's recommendation, but I've already been pumping a year so I've exceeded most expectations and I feel like I've given him enough of a good start. Not ready to give up yet, but it won't be the end of the world if I dry up now.

July 1 - Happy birthday Will!

Will had a great birthday! We went to Sizzler for brunch with my mom & sister then the Hambuger Factory with family & friends for dinner. Thanks so much everyone for coming to see him and for all the great gifts & well wishes! He had a great time showing off for everyone, got tons of cool "loot" and enough funds to start a savings account for him! He got to mush a cupcake and gnaw on a pickle, and got enough fun toys to keep him busy for weeks! Adore all his cute new little outfits too!I can't believe a year ago today he could have worn the leg of his new shorts as a sleeping bag! He's a very tired little boy this evening, took half a bottle and went right to sleep as soon as we got home.

June 28

Craziness. A year ago today I was in the hospital, contracting 3-7 times/hour even on magnesium, 27 weeks 2 days pregnant. Will has been a little monster the last few days, restless, irritable. He's frustrated trying to walk and I'm sure his 2nd tooth is cutting through, it's bumped up and the gums felt rough yesterday over it. It's the other front bottom one. Only 3 days until his birthday! Haven't been able to get many pics the last few days, camera batteries died then I replaced them, got some great shots and for some reason it didn't save them - arrrg! In one of the pics he's grinning getting tummy kisses - you can see his shiny little tooth if you look closely!June 22

Will is still doing great. We've moved into our own apartment again, mostly unpacked and settling in. He's enjoying having more space to roam and carpet for when he falls down, which is often. He's crusing along furniture more often, and the last few days letting go a lot to stand there a few seconds before he falls down. He tried taking a step towards me today but fell and smacked his head on the desk leg poor little guy. He's okay, but I think it's going to leave a bruise. He's tried a few new foods, including hot dogs, beans and hard boiled egg yolks. I think the beans were the biggest hit. His favorites now are La Creme yogurt, gerber banana puffs cereal, cheese, chicken and probably the beans if he takes them as well next time. He also got to try some soft serve ice cream with mixed reactions. He's saying mom sometimes now too, and occasionally dada. His first tooth is showing now, the front bottom and the one next to it is getting ready to cut through too. He's dragging that tooth across everything teething and has bit himself a few times. His hair is starting to come in more too.
I've been off the diet a week or two, too busy and stressed to settle down and cook to eat right. Still somehow losing weight, down a total of 55 lbs now. Will's birthday is a week from Sunday, July 1. We're planning his party a small family get-together at the park in the evening about 5. He's wanting to go to bed about 6:30 lately so it won't be a long get-together.
May 22

Will has started sticking his finger in his ear a lot, but he doesn't have an ear infection he's just being weird. He's doing that in one of the pictures. Doc told me since Will is mostly refusing to eat Stage 1 foods (anything pureed and bland) that we can feed him table food as we see fit, and recommended we focus on high fat, high calorie foods since his weight gain is lagging. She suggests chicken nuggets, grilled cheese sandwich pieces, french fries, full fat yogurt, hot dogs cut into quarters lengthwise, avocado pieces, cheese and egg yolks. So we may be trying those soon. Right now he refuses to eat any more cereal (the pureed stuff) but he'll take Gerber Puffs (like breakfast cereal pieces), bits of banana, chicken, cheese or whatever I'm eating. He tried my strawberry yogurt today and LOVED it so I guess I'll be getting him some full fat yogurt. We're finally getting him to voluntarily eat small amounts of baby food, with entertainingly messy results. That's carrots all over his face and half the house. Enjoy.May 17

Will is doing great crawling, and now squeals when he's headed towards something he likes, especially if it's something he shouldn't be into. He's still pulling up on everything, though he's falling down less now since he's learned to sit down. He can move the walker pretty well now. He got some cool new shades today and I found him a few new hats, he has no hair so I don't want him to sunburn. We've had a cold. Justin is doing well at his new job, still in training. I'm down about 47 lbs. Still fat, but feeling better than I was. I got my hair cut today, a bit shorter with some layers. Not a lot different but it has a bit of style now and feels more feminine. That's about it - enjoy the new pics! April 26

We went out to the lake last weekend to walk around. I've been looking for some part time work to increase how much we can put in savings every month. Got measured at Curves yesterday and I've lost over 22 inches since I started going there Feb 17, and lost about 42 lbs total. Justin starts his new job Saturday and Will is going to be 10 months old on Tuesday. Nothing really interesting new to report, just had a couple cute pics to share!
